Homeschooling in Missouri

The Missouri law, in plain English — and how Larose Christian Academy keeps your family covered.

📌 The short version

Missouri keeps it light: no registration, no notification. Children must receive 1,000 hours of instruction per year covering core subjects (most at home). LCA provides the school-of-record role so families have official report cards and transcripts when needed.

Compulsory Attendance

Ages 7 to 17

Notification / Registration

No state registration or notification required.

How a Cover School Helps

Missouri treats homeschools as private schools with light regulation. Cover schools provide official records and transcripts without state filing.

Curriculum

Instruction must include reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science.

Attendance

At least 1,000 hours of instruction per school year, at least 600 of those hours in reading, language arts, math, social studies, or science, and at least 400 of the 600 hours at the regular home school location (RSMo §167.012). Requirements do not apply to pupils 16 or older.

Records & Testing

Maintain a plan book/diary of subjects taught, a portfolio of academic work samples, and a record of evaluations (or other written/credible equivalent evidence). Records are reviewed only by the local prosecuting attorney if a question arises. Maintain academic evaluations as part of homeschool records (regular tests or annual standardized tests). No test results are submitted to the state.

Teacher Requirements

No teacher certification required.
