No state notification or registration required. Homeschools operate as non-accredited private schools.

How a Cover School Helps

Indiana has no state oversight of non-accredited private schools, so no state filing exists and no statute gives a cover school an official school-of-record function. What LCA provides to Hoosier families is a records service, issuing report cards, a transcript and a diploma in its own name.

Curriculum

No state-mandated subject list or curriculum, but the instruction provided must be equivalent to that taught in the public schools (IC 20-33-2-28).

Attendance

The Indiana code fixes no number of days: the student attends for the number of days the public schools are in session (IC 20-33-2-5), and the familiar 180-day figure comes from state DOE guidance, not from the statute. An accurate daily attendance record must be kept, and its only statutory purpose is to verify enrollment and attendance on the request of the secretary of education or the superintendent of the school corporation where the nonpublic school is located (IC 20-33-2-20(c)).

An accurate daily attendance record is required (IC 20-33-2-20) — no special form mandated. Keeping grades/transcripts is best practice for high school and college. No state testing required.
