The CHOOSE Act, in plain English
If you homeschool in Alabama, you have probably heard about the CHOOSE Act. Here is what it actually is, what it pays, who administers it, and what your family needs to check before counting on it.
What it is
The CHOOSE Act — Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education Act of 2024, signed into law on 7 March 2024 — creates refundable income tax credits called Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) for eligible Alabama K–12 students.
Home-education award
Up to $2,000 per eligible student per academic year for students in a home-education program, capped at $4,000 per family.
Who runs it
The Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR) administers the program. ClassWallet provides programmatic support and coordinates distribution of the funds.
How funds are spent
Families use their student’s ESA to pay approved Education Service Providers (ESPs) — providers that ALDOR has approved to supply educational goods and services.

We are a school, not the program administrator, and programme rules, eligibility and deadlines can change. Always confirm current eligibility and which expenses qualify directly with the Alabama Department of Revenue before you make a decision based on ESA funding.
What this means for a homeschooling family
A homeschool student can be an eligible student — including a student enrolled in a church school.
The award for a home-education student is up to $2,000 per student per year, capped at $4,000 per family.
Funds are spent with Education Service Providers that ALDOR has approved — not with every school or vendor automatically.
Whether a particular expense or provider qualifies is an ALDOR question. Ask them, and ask early.
