Compulsory Attendance

Ages 6 to 19

Notification / Registration

No state notification, registration, or oversight. Homeschools operate as private schools (Tex. Educ. Agency v. Leeper, 893 S.W.2d 432 (Tex. 1994)). A child under 6 who has already been enrolled in first grade is also covered, as is a child enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten (Tex. Educ. Code 25.085(b), (c)).

How a Cover School Helps

Texas treats a homeschool taught by the family itself as the private school for the attendance exemption, with no state regulation and nothing to file. Texas law gives a cover school no school-of-record function and requires no accreditation here; what a cover school provides is a records service, issuing report cards, transcripts and a diploma in its own name.

Curriculum

Instruction must be bona fide and include reading, spelling, grammar, math, and good citizenship. That subject list comes from the Leeper decision rather than from the statute: Tex. Educ. Code 25.086(a)(1) itself mentions only a study of good citizenship.

Attendance

No statutory days requirement; instruction must be regular and bona fide.

Records & Testing

No state-required records, but transcripts matter for college. No state testing required.

Teacher Requirements

No teacher certification required.
